How to Maintain Your Chainsaw
April 15, 2009 by Robert
When you first purchase a new chainsaw and get it home, it works so well. Unfortunately though, over time chainsaws can start to cause problems for their users, mostly because of improper maintenance. It's not difficult to maintain a chainsaw properly, but it does require that you do certain things. The good news is that if you do properly maintain your chainsaw, they can last for many, many years which in the long term will save you money. Below are a few tips to help you keep your chainsaw in great shape so you won't have to deal with the hassle of breakdowns.
Make Sure To Sharpen The Chain
This might seem obvious, but it goes get overlooked. A chainsaw that is dull will not cut properly and will end up in countless hours of frustration. Visit a local chainsaw shop and they can sharpen the blades for you, or if you are an avid user, purchase your own sharpener and do it right at home.
Fuel & Lubrication
We all know that a gas chainsaw won't run without fuel, so this fairly obvious, but what about other lubrication? Make sure that the chainsaw lubrication reservoir is always full and that you are using the proper chain and bar oil.
Tension
Always check the chain tension before using, while the chainsaw is still cold.
Cleaning
After each use, disassemble the chainsaw and clean the saw dust and dirt out of the chainsaw parts that are hidden by guards.
Air Filter
Like any gasoline engine, there's an air filter that pulls in air to mix with fuel. The air filter must be kept clean so that the engine is able to run at an optimal level.
Spark Plugs
Just like on your car, a chainsaw has spark plugs that should be cleaned, checked and replaced fairly regularly. Although they are not expensive, they make a huge difference in making the chainsaw start easily and burn the proper amount of fuel.
Loose Bolts & Screws
Because a gas chainsaw vibrates while in operation, check to make sure all bolts and screws are tight as they may work themselves loose over time.
Start Rope
Depending how often you use your chainsaw, the start rope can often become worn and should be replaced before it breaks.
Check Idle
If you notice that when your chainsaw is idling, that the chain is still moving, turn the idle setting down. This can be a major safety issue.
Read the Owners Manual
One of the most obvious and most overlooked maintenance concerns comes simply from not reading the manual. Each chainsaw manufacturer will provide you with ample information regarding how to maintain the chainsaw properly and ALL their suggestions should be followed. Not only will it result in a chainsaw that lasts a long time, but by not following their directions, you may void any warranty that is left.
By following the tips above and ultimately by reading the owners manual for your particular chainsaw, you can prolong the life of your chainsaw. We all know that they are expensive and making them last will save you money.
