Gas or Electric?
This is a good starting point for most people. If you're looking to do some yard cleanup or small cutting near to your home, an electric chainsaw will do just fine. However, if you are looking to take your chainsaw into the forest to cut down large trees, you will most certainly want a gas chainsaw.
Size
Decide if you're going to be taking down large trees or just cleaning up and pruning small branches. A 14 inch bar is good for a small cleanup job, but to take down large trees you will want to opt for a chainsaw with a larger engine and with a bar of at least 20 inches. Generally speaking, a chainsaw can cut through wood that is twice the size of the bar meaning that if you have a 16 inch bar, you can cut through a 32 inch tree.
Brand
A number of brands are available and when it comes chainsaws, the brand really does matter. The prices of lesser known brands can be very attractive, but when it comes down to actually doing the work, a better established brand is a better choice. Popular and respected brands of chainsaws include Husqvarna, Echo, Makita, McCulloch, Stihl, Jonsered, Homelite, Pioneer and Poulan. Stick to one of these major brands and you will be quite satisfied. The price will be more than a lesser known brand, but well worth it do get a good quality chainsaw.
Accessories
Once you have purchased the actual chainsaw, don't forget the accessories that are a must for the particular chainsaw that you are purchasing. Carrying and storage cases are handy and of course, don't forget to purchase safety gear like boots and safety glasses.
Portability
Decide where you will use your chainsaw most. If it's in your yard for small jobs, an electric chainsaw will work fine, but for jobs where power is not available, opt for a gas chainsaw.
Right or Left-Handed?
Most chainsaws are made for right-handed people, but some are interchangeable. If they have a bar that goes all the way across the handle, then they can be used by either. Some chainsaws just have a cross bar that goes from one side, but don't connect to the other side and generally these will only work with either right or left-handed people, but not both.
Now that you have some knowledge of exactly what you should be looking for when it comes to buying your first chainsaw, it's time to narrow it down now. Choose a few different chainsaws and compare them to one another to see which one will work best for you.
A good brand for your first chainsaw is Poulan, a division of Husqvarna or McCulloch.
