There's an old saying about firewood: "Firewood warms you two times – once when you cut it and again when you burn it". Anyone with a wood burning stove or fireplace knows the truth of this saying and for millennia, that's just the way it was; cutting firewood was a physically demanding chore. However, newer tools like electric, gas powered and hydraulic log splitters have reduced the workload of cutting firewood and allowed people to spend less time cutting wood and more enjoying the warmth of the fire.

What to Look For in a Log Splitter

What should you be looking for when you're in the market for a log splitter? First of all, it depends on whether you're in need of something which can split a lot of wood so you can sell it or one which is just for the use of your household. If you just need wood for your own stove or fireplace, then a smaller splitter (2-5 tons of pressure) will do nicely. However, if you plan to split wood to sell, then you'll want something more heavy duty, perhaps a 20 ton unit. Buying a smaller splitter than you need means you'll quickly burn out the engine, so be sure to get one which is adequate for your needs.

There are some people who have discovered that a high quality log splitter has uses other than cutting wood for the fireplace or stove. A log splitter can be a great tool for making furniture with a rustic look. Commercial splitters are often used to make rough planks, cut larger trees down to a more manageable size for shipping and other applications besides. Log splitters are useful for the home and for businesses, saving countless time and effort in every situation where they are used.

Prices of Log Splitters

You can get a high quality log splitter which will last you for many years of use at a cost of a few hundred dollars. These smaller splitters for personal use tend to be electrically powered models; larger splitters are usually hydraulically powered and while they are suitable for heavy duty use, they cost about ten times as much as the smaller log splitters made for individual use around the home.

Small electric log splitters are perfectly fine for use in the home, especially if your wood burning stove or fireplace is not the primary sources of heat in your home. However, if you need a log splitter for a business, even a small one, then you'll most likely need a hydraulic log splitter since these are more powerful and long-lasting (they're also suitable for making log furniture with).

Log Splitter Maintenance

Proper maintenance is important as with any power tool. Most of the newer log splitters don't require too much maintenance, but in order to operate your log splitter efficiently and safely, you'll want to educate yourself about maintaining your log splitter to ensure safe operation and a longer life for the tool.

How to Measure Your Chainsaw Blade and Chain

May 27, 2009 by Robert · Leave a Comment

Every chainsaw owner needs to know how to perform some important routine maintenance tasks; one of these is replacing the chain as needed. Knowing how to properly replace your chain is essential to using your chainsaw safely and keeping it running efficiently. To learn more about replacing a chainsaw chain, have a look at the following tips.

How Do You Measure Your Chainsaw Chain And Blade?

From time to time, you'll need to replace your chain, so you'll have to know how long your chainsaw blade is and what kind of chain your chainsaw takes. There are charts you can look at, but there's an easier way to figure out the length of your chainsaw blade and chain.

Start with the length of your chainsaw bar - in many cases, the bar size is actually part of the model number of the chainsaw. For example, Oregon chainsaws include the length of the chainsaw bar in the 10-digit model number stamped on the blade near the motor end (the length is the first two digits).

However, if you have a model of chainsaw which doesn't have the length of the blade in such an obvious place, you can measure it yourself.

What's The Best Way To Measure A Chain Saw Blade?

It's easier to measure a chainsaw blade than you may have thought. All you have to do is to measure from the end of the blade to where it emerges from the casing. This is the only measurement you'll need; the perimeter measurement won't matter for your purposes here.

You may have noticed that we're using the terms blade and bar interchangeable; they both denote the same part of the chainsaw, so either term is accurate.

Chainsaw blades are sized in increments of two inches, with the most common sizes being 16, 18 or 20 inches. However, you can find chainsaws with sizes as small as 10 inches and as large as 42 inches. If your measurement yields an uneven number, just round up to the next even number.

Drive Links

To measure the length of your chainsaw chain, you'll need to find two things: the number of drive links and the pitch of the chain. A drive link is one tooth on the chain – the length is measured in the number of drive links.

The pitch of the chain refers to the size of the drive links (and thus the chain itself). You can determine the pitch of your chainsaw chain by measuring the distance between any three rivets on the chain and dividing this number by two. Your chain pitch is an important figure; the pitch has to match the size of your drive sprocket and usually the size of the bar nose sprocket as well. Usually, you won't have to measure the pitch yourself; it is generally stamped on the drive link.

For instance, say you have a chain with a pitch of ¼" with 52 drive links, the overall length should be 2.17'. If your chain has a 3/8 " pitch with the same number of drive links, your chain will be 3.18' long. The pitch size affects the total length of the chain.

If you have any further questions about measuring your chainsaw chain, then you can get more information from the manufacturer of your chainsaw or from a chain manufacturer.

Great tool around the yard.

Review Date: May 22, 2004
Reviewer: Benjamin Lankheet, Canandaigua, NY USA
We have used ours for 3 years now and it has to be the best tools we have for yard work. It will actually cut down trees (small ones). It trims, it de-limbs, cuts firewood, clears brush, cooks dinner (grin). We were a little skeptical when we bought it but it has turned into one of our most used tools. It works as described and more. It is also very tough (It gets dropped a lot) and has never failed. We bought an extra battery and recommend that for long days in the yard. The NiMH battery lasts over an hour of heavy use. I would give it 6 stars if I could.
Great, compact chainsaw

I love this Makita! It is not too heavy and I am able to do an incredible amount of work with it before there is any sign of low battery charge. I have a 7-acre property so being able to easily carry this around to do spot cleanup has come in very handy.
Amazing

Easy to handle and so light. Great for those hard to reach places like under fence wires, beats using hand loppers! I am worn out just about the time the battery is run down. :)

THIS MAKITA KIT HAS PERFORMED SUPERBURBLY! IN TYPICAL MAKITA FASHION, THE KIT IS EXTREMELY WELL BUILT. THE BATTERY CHARGE REMAINS STRONG AND I HAVE CUT LOGS UP TO 5 INCHES IN DIAMETER WITH NO PROBLEM. ONE SUGGESTION I WOULD MAKE...PURCHASE A SECOND BATTERY (WHICH I DID) TO HAVE ONE CHARGING WHILE THE OTHER IS IN USE. I USE THE SAW ON A FARM WHERE ELECTRIC POWER IS NOT AVAILABLE, AND OUR GAS POWERED SAWS ARE OVERKILL.
YOU WON'T GO WRONG PURCHASING A MAKITA!
The Little Saw That Could

Review Date: October 2, 2008
Reviewer: John L. Francis,
I was quite dissapointed when I first received the saw. It quickly tired on small branches and would not allow me to apply any pressure or it would stall out. I called Makita customer service and returned it for repair. They replaced the DC motor and some gears and now it does what it is supposed to do. I love it for trimming branches on trees. I use it on my Christmas tree farm alot to square off trunks after customers cut them down. The extension works well but I do feel the product is a bit pricey.
