Stamped Concrete The Exciting Standard Material With A New Look
October 31, 2010 by Adriana Noton · Leave a Comment
Stamped concrete isn't exactly a brand new material but instead a traditional tried and true material with a fresh new look. This type of concrete can emulate a host of other building materials from bricks to flagstones or cobblestones. In addition the surface can be impressed with an almost infinite variety of textures. This concrete often is colored in order to make it more beautiful and to more closely resemble the material it's intended to simulate.
There are circumstances where clearly the most superior material is concrete in terms of strength and durability but is not preferred due to its appearance. A walkway made of concrete can be seamless, not subject to buckling or separation as cobblestones might be, but far less attractive than a stone walkway. Stamped concrete allows the homeowner to have the beautiful walkway they desire but also have the strength of concrete to make it last.
Concrete and it's stamped variation has been available for a very long time. However, it is recent advances on coloration and imprinting technology that have produced the superior look of stamped concrete. In the past it was reserved for situations where no other material was practical and it still lacked a great deal of aesthetic appeal.
Stamped concrete today is still very much concrete with all the virtues concrete brings but it also achieves a distinctive look that the discerning builder and homeowner find appealing. In addition to it's ability to emulate naturally occurring materials more closely, textured concrete also requires fewer repairs in trying conditions.
The stamping process for concrete isn't an easy do it yourself project. It requires specialized equipment and skill and is a multistage affair. While pouring concrete is relatively straight forward and almost anyone can do it, the stamping and texture impression process is almost always strictly a job for the skilled professional.
Concrete to be stamped is poured as usual but is laid at least four inches deep. Colors can be added to the concrete in the mixer or can be applied after. A release agent is applied to the surface of the concrete. The release agent will permit the stamping mats to be applied and then release them without taking the concrete up as well.
The concrete must dry for a full 24 hours and at that point the release agent is washed off the surface. After drying a clear sealant is then applied to the concrete surface. The sealant will help preserve the color and looks of the textured concrete surface.
Textured and colored decorative concrete won't fool most people into believe it is wood or natural stone but it gives an added aesthetic appeal to the concrete surface. This allows concrete to be used where it serves best without the builder having to settle for boring or ugly. Sometimes the improvement to tried and true products can be as exciting as brand new materials are.

One of the first aspects to consider when building a pond will be the position. It's important to note that virtually all overhanging trees, including evergreens, will certainly drop leaves or needles into the water. These will have to be taken out often to restrict algal growth and protect the ecology of the pond. If you'd like to incorporate a fountain or waterfall in your pond it is important to provide access to an electrical power supply near to the pond.
Ponds may end up being as small as three to four feet in diameter and lined basically with heavy duty plastic sheeting or pond liner. They may also be constructed completely above ground with bricks or blocks. In this case the inside of the pond can be painted with a silicone waterproof solution. The size and type of pond you ultimately choose will depend on the size of your property, just how much space you are prepared to dedicate to the pond as well as the money that you are prepared to invest.
Getting Creative Ideas For Pond Designs Building a pond can be fun, nevertheless deciding on just what it will look like can take some time and some research. There are lots of magazines and books that include design and style ideas for building a pond so if you're planning to retain the services of a building contractor with experience in pond building, they are going to undoubtedly have numerous concept options for you to choose from.
If you've seen a pond that appeals to you it is easy to take a photo to show to the contractor or have a shot at copying the design yourself. If you determine that building a pond is a project you can do without any help you'll still want to do some homework on the proper installing of waterfalls, fountains and aeration methods to make sure they are put in properly.
Bear in mind, if you plan in advance for the installation of electrical power and an overflow drain, it really is simpler to include them during the building stage as compared to having to add them after the pond is full of water. And, lastly, construct your pond as big as you can because they frequently seem smaller than you envisioned when filled.
