Hobby Greenhouse: Picking A Place For The Structure
February 22, 2010 by Eddie John
If you want to extend your growing season, a hobby greenhouse is likely to be a good opportunity for earlier spring planting and harvests later in the autumn. Home greenhouses used for a gardening hobby are not just small versions of a commercial operation. They have different purposes and configuration to conserve energy and take advantage of passive heat and cooling measures.
Decide on the Uses for your Greenhouse Space
Before you decide on the correct greenhouse to use for your home garden, you need to decide what you intend to do within the walls of the greenhouse. Will it be used for the majority of your growing space? Maybe you will only use it to protect seedlings in the spring from late frosts. Some gardeners plant a separate winter garden that is enclosed with the greenhouse. The way in which the greenhouse will be used will help you to determine the size and location of your new greenhouse.
Will Heat in the Greenhouse be Necessary?
If you are using greenhouse space during the summer months, you can probably get by with fans and ventilation to keep plants from being overheated. If the location allows for greenhouse usage in summer months, the interior arrangement is likely to be different to allow for growing room of the plants. When you have a summer use greenhouse, placement where there is partial shade may be important.
The greenhouse intended for use in the winter season will be designed differently. Sometimes, hobby gardeners want to have fresh vegetables and tomatoes for salads and cooking throughout the year. If the space is to be used in winter, it will probably need to be heated. Common heat sources are propane, wood, electricity and hot water. Solar energy can be used for some purposes to allow a lesser energy costs.
Deciding on Greenhouse Placement
Choose your greenhouse location carefully. Sunshine during the winter reduces external heat needs. Breezes in the summer season can help reduce internal temperatures in the greenhouse. Since many greenhouses are needed mostly in winter and spring months, it is most critical to allow for the best site during these months
Natural heating and cooling capability is important for your hobby greenhouse. Winter sunshine and summer breezes are equally important to the health of your plants. Use lean-to designs on the winter wall to capture the passive heat of the sun's rays. Place the structure carefully to attempt to take advantage of each temperature need.
Building a great hobby greenhouse has gotten easier! You can start your do it yourself project today with a greenhouse blueprint and enjoy your greenhouse soon!
