A log splitter is one of those must-have tools if you find yourself spending a lot of time cutting firewood - these machines can make short work of a large amount of wood. They're ideal for cutting firewood or cutting logs to be used in furniture; and they're readily available anywhere you can find logging equipment and even on the web.
Hydraulic log splitters are the most powerful types of log splitters, though there are also gas-powered, diesel-fueled and electrically powered models available. A hydraulic log splitter is suitable for commercial scale log splitting, furniture making and heavy duty use.
With any type of wood splitter, the engine should be the first thing you look at. Smaller wood splitters made for use around the home will have small 5-8 horsepower engines and 2 stage oil pumps. These splitters can exert 10-25 tons of pressure.
Log splitters are usually used in conjunction with a chainsaw. The chainsaw is used to fell trees and trim off limbs, with the log splitter being used to split the trunk into firewood. A log splitter saves vast amounts of time; if your home is heated by a wood burning stove or fireplace in the winter, you already know how time-consuming of a task cutting firewood can be.
Since safety is job number one when dealing with a log splitter - Here are the most important safety rules to follow as you work with your splitter:
1. Children should never operate a log splitter or even be present while the machine is in use because of flying debris.
2. Wear safety goggles, steel toed shoes or boots and avoid wearing loose clothing which could be caught in the wood splitter as you work.
3. Always read the owner's manual thoroughly before using.
4. Make sure that you operate your log splitter well clear of people, animals or objects which could be damaged or injured by debris.
5. Never adjust the splitter while it is running.
6. Only use your log splitter in daylight, never at night.
7. Remember that alcohol and power tools do not mix.
8. Use your log splitter only on dry surfaces.
9. Never put any material other than wood in the splitter.
10. Make sure the guards are in place before you turn on the machine.
Whether for firewood or making furniture, a log splitter is a powerful tool which saves a lot of time and manual labor. You should always use caution and exercise common sense when using a log splitter and follow all of these safety rules to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you as you use this tool.
Find Log Splitters at very affordable prices.
